This volume includes contributions by the leading experts in the field of yeast aging. Budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and other fungal organisms provide models for aging research that are relevant to organismic aging and to the aging processes occurring in the human body. Replicative aging, in which only the mother cell ages while the daughter cell resets the clock to zero is a model for the aging of stem cell populations in humans, while chronological aging (measured by survival in stationary phase) is a model for the aging processes in postmitotic cells (for instance, neurons of the brain). Most mechanisms of aging are studied in yeast. Among them, this book discusses: mitochondrial theories of aging, emphasizing oxidative stress and retrograde responses; the role of autophagy and mitophagy; the relationship of apoptosis to aging processes; the role of asymmetric segregation of damage in replicative aging; the role of replication stress; and the role of the cytoskeleton in aging. Modern methods of yeast genetics and genomics are described that can be used to search for aging-specific functions in a genome-wide unbiased fashion. The similarities in the pathology of senescence (studied in yeast) and of cancer cells, including genome instability, are examined.

About the Author

Marcia Nahikian Nelms is currently a professor at The Ohio State University and a registered dietician. Dr. Nahikian Nelms continues to consult in these practice areas as she guides new practitioners into the profession of dietetics. She is the lead author of Nutrition Therapy and Pathophysiology (2011) and Medical Nutrition Therapy: A Case Study Approach (2009), both published by Cengage Learning, and author of "Nutritional Care of Lymphoma" in Nutritional Issues of Cancer Care, published by the Oncology Nursing Society (2004), as well as numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters for other texts. Dr. Nahikian Nelms has most recently been honored as the recipient of the PRIDE award at Southeast Missouri State University. This award is given to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence as a teacher and an extraordinary level of scholarship and service. She additionally was named Outstanding Dietetics Educator in Missouri and received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Teaching.

Dr. Sucher received her Sc.D. from Boston University Medical Center in Nutritional Science. She has held several positions in industry before coming to San Jose State University. She is a recognized authority on how diet, health, and disease are affected by culture/ethnicity and religion. Other research interests include medical nutrition therapy. Dr. Sucher has published newsletters, numerous articles, and textbooks on this subject. She is also the co-author of NUTRITION THERAPY AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGY, 2E (Cengage Learning 2011).

Karen Lacey, MS, RD,CD is currently the director of the dietetics program at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Karen has over 15 years of experience in dietetics' education, having also previously directed the dietetic internship at UW-Green Bay. Her career in dietetics began as a clinical dietitian and her expertise focuses on the implementation of ADA's Nutrition Care Process; having chaired the work group that first developed the Nutrition Care Process and Model in 2003. She is a coauthor of Medical Nutrition Therapy: A Case Study Approach, 3rd. Ms. Lacey has been and remains very active with the national, state and local dietetic associations. She has served on ADA's Commission for Dietetic Education (CADE) and continues to be a program reviewer for CADE. Karen is also a member of ADA's Association Position Committee and was recently elected as the Wisconsin Dietetic Association President-Elect. Ms. Lacey completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Foods and Nutrition from Valparaiso University, and a Master's of Science in Dietetics with emphases in Clinical Dietetics and Management from Mt. Mary College, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She completed a Dietetic Internship at the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her specialty areas are medical nutrition therapy, nutrition education, and food and nutrition assessment. About the Author

John W. For nearly 10 years, Weston Price and his wife traveled around the world in search of the secret to health. Instead of looking at people afflicted with disease symptoms, this highly-respected dentist and dental researcher chose to focus on healthy individuals, and challenged himself to understand how they achieved such amazing health. Dr. Price traveled to hundreds of cities in a total of 14 different countries in his search to find healthy people. He investigated some of the most remote areas in the world. Modern nutrition research is a mess. As a scientist who's interested in health research, I find the field to be amazingly full of bias and unscientific thinking. It's driven more by popular consensus than logic.

For those who are concerned with the credibility of the book, I'll mention that it's very consistent with what anthropologists and field physicians were saying at the time. Price also published some of his findings in respected peer-reviewed journals like JAMA and JADA during his lifetime. His genius was in consolidating information from many different cultures and examining what they had in common. Modern Western food habits have left a trail of destruction throughout the world, and it was painfully obvious to anyone observing a transition from traditional foods to industrially processed Western foods.

Price and other groups of researchers have shown that modern degenerative disease is caused by a modern diet, yet mainstream nutrition research continues to fumble around in the dark. These days, researchers conduct studies that compare the sick to the sicker and confuse correlation with causation. This information then gets conveyed to us by a media that is completely unscientific and more concerned with creating a big story than conveying sound information.
