Medical Microbiology (Flexibook)

Medical Microbiology (Flexibook)
by F. H. Kayser (Author), K. A. Bienz (Author), J. Eckert (Author), R. M. Zinkernagel (Author)

While medical and hygienic developments have driven down the mortality rates of infectious diseases, pathogenic microorganisms are still a major factor in everyday clinical practice. They are still the most frequent cause of death in Third World countries. New and incurable infectious diseases are a worldwide problem. It is inescapable, therefore, that modern medicine must redouble its efforts to understand the relationship between microorganisms and humans and continue to lead the search for new therapies. The following five subject areas are covered:
  •     Immunology
  •     Bacteriology
  •     Mycology
  •     Virology
  •     Parasitology
This book provides a clearly focused and richly detailed review of the entire field of medical microbiology. It is both a textbook for students of medicine and dentistry and a useful companion for medical technicians and laboratory assistants, both at school and in the laboratory. It will also serve as a handy work of reference for clinical practitioners. The book is structured with teachability in mind: The many color illustrations and microscopic images render complex themes readily accessible. Summaries at the beginning of every chapter, a color-coded reference guide and detailed diagnostic tables make this an excellent sourcebook for rapid learning and quick reference. A list of important internet addresses in the appendix will help the book's users keep abreast of cutting-edge research.

Treatment of Cancer Fifth Edition (A Hodder Arnold Publication)

Treatment of Cancer Fifth Edition (A Hodder Arnold Publication)

Since the first edition was published in 1982, Treatment of Cancer has become a standard text for postgraduate physicians in the UK and beyond, providing all information necessary for modern cancer management in one comprehensive but accessible volume. By inviting experts from a number of disciplines to share their knowledge, the editors have succeeded in delivering a truly integrated approach to the care of the patient with cancer.

This fifth edition adopts the successful structure of previous editions, whilst being thoroughly revised and updated, and with several completely new chapters, covering important topics such as drug development, cancer prevention, and economics of cancer care, as well as treatments such as radioimmunotherapy, biological therapies and antibody therapy.

Part One considers the scientific basis and fundamental principles underlying cancer treatment and examines the likely developments that will occur over the next decade at the leading edge of oncology. Part Two is divided into two sections; the first covering general issues of cancer management, including planning techniques, concomitent chemoradiotherapy, surgical oncology and palliative care; and the second using a system-based approach to cover the clinical aspects and management plans for the whole spectrum of malignant disease.

Treatment of Cancer surpasses other oncology texts in condensing the essential information for exemplary cancer care into one readable and accessible guide, and will be an invaluable addition to the bookshelves of the busy oncologist in training or in practice

Parasitology for Medical and Clinical Laboratory Professionals

Parasitology for Medical and Clinical Laboratory Professionals by John W Ridley

PARASITOLOGY FOR MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIANS is the ideal text to guide readers in understanding the background, source, recovery, and identification of a well-representative range of organisms that commonly affect humans. This book organizes a complex set of topics into an understandable and easy-to-read format that will help readers learn more about parasitic infections and how to effectively collect and prepare samples, aiding in the diagnosis of parasitosis. The subtle differences between similar parasitic organisms are all explained in a simple and easily understood manner, increasing the likelihood that readers will be able to recover the parasites, prepare them for identification and, subsequently, ensure effective treatment.

"This manuscript is written for both technicians and technologists. It provides both didactic and technical protocols in one text. The study of medical parasitology is documented from a historical perspective to the current date along with the tedious, accurate identification of pathogenic versus nonpathogenic organisms. This textbook is becoming available to replace the typically used textbooks in clinical laboratory science programs." Mildred K. Fuller, Ph.D., MT (ASCP), Norfolk State University

"As a professional microbiologist, I found this book to be interesting and easy to read. The book covers many of the parasites that are clinically relevant without being to technical or fact heavy." - Tobi L Camilli BS, ASCP(M), University of New Mexico, Gallup Branch

About the Author

John W. Ridley, Ph.D., RN, MT (ASCP), has served as a medical technologist, trainer, educator, manager, and program administrator throughout a varied, 30-year career with a strong emphasis on medical laboratory occupations. Workbook for Ehrlich/Schroeder's Medical Terminology for Health Professions, 7th

Workbook for Ehrlich/Schroeder's Medical Terminology for Health Professions, 7th by Ann Ehrlich (Author).

Use a proven combination of learning principles and exercises to make learning medical terminology easier . Now in its 7th Edition, MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONS simplifies the process of memorizing complex medical terminology by focusing on the important word parts -- the common prefixes, suffixes and root words -- to provide a foundation for learning hundreds of medical terms. Organized by body systems, the chapters begin with an overview of the terminology related to the body's structures and functions, then proceed through diseases and disorders, and finally diagnostic procedures and treatments. This helps students master the necessary language to describe how the human body works, what goes wrong with it, and how we treat it. Every chapter engages learners with the See and Say pronunciation system, intreractive excersizes, real life medical scenarios and critical thinking exercises. An updated art program includes illustrations that reflect the latest terms and procedures, and multi-cultural /multi-generational photos that accurately portray today's medical world. Built-in multimedia is included with the text on the StudyWare CD-ROM.

This resource is packed full of activities that engage student with games, quizzes, animations, and an audio glossary -ultimately helping students study , prepare for exams, and achieve success . Optional workbook and online courseware is also available. Ann Ehrlich is an experienced teacher, professional author and life-long student.

She has written numerous books on health topics such as dental assisting, practice management, speech therapy and lymphedema, and has been considered one of the leading experts in the field of medical terminology since 1988. Carol L. Schroeder has been working over 15 years to find innovative ways to present medical terminology at a level appropriate for this text's students. Her background in technical writing, translating and research is invaluable in continuously updating the content and in creating new activities and approaches, such as the Simplified Syllabus, to enable instructors to present engaging courses that help all students succeed.

About Author Ann Ehrlich

I have been a professional author for many years and it is an occupation that I thoroughly enjoy. Being one of the authors of the textbook "Medical Terminology for Health Professions" is a very special undertaking for me. By working together, and with the support of our publisher, Carol and I have established a creative synergy that has enabled us to achieve our two main goals for this book. Our primary goal is to enable students to learn medical terms as easy and effectively as possible. We do this through organizing the text by body systems, emphasizing word parts, and generously using full color illustrations. Additional aids, that accommodate varied learning styles, are included in the StudyWARE CD.

Here, through a variety of formats, and games, learning fun becomes more fun. Our second goal, which is of equal importance, is to assist instructors by providing them with quality learning aids.
  • "The Instructors Manual" includes classroom activities, such as "medical mysteries," quizzes, and tips for teachers.
  • Power Points presentations reinforce terms and can be used to correct textbook exercises in class.
  • Animations clarify content and add interest.
  • The Computerized Test Bank speeds creation by the instructor of quality tests.
  • An audio CD is a valuable aid to teach students correct pronunciations of complex terms. We welcome suggestions from students and teachers as to additional ways in which the book came be made even more user friendly.

Books Review

"As someone who has used this book in the past, I know it is excellent for teaching medical students. It also is reasonably priced for students who are dealing with the high cost of medical education. The most valuable features are the excellent pictures and figures that enhance the understanding of complex issues. Each chapter is followed by a few thought-provoking questions that can be used during teaching to encourage deeper understanding of the material.
Although written for medical students in the first years of training, the book also is very useful for students in advanced training such as residency or fellowships." - Rebecca T. Horvat, PhD, D(ABMM)(University of Kansas Medical Center), from Doody's Reviews

CURRENT Medical Diagnosis and Treatment 2013 Review :

The 2013 is my third edition of CMDT in the past ten years. First of all, I still find the book book printed in a readable type-size, attractive layout, and clearly defined style. When I'm reading about a topic, I know where I am - the introductory paragraph, the diagnostic workup, or treatment standards. Not every clinician is under 30, and I really appreciate the readability.

CMDT is CURRENT. Yes, that's the name because the information is the up-to-date management of most conditions and diseases you might encounter. I recently entered a new area of practice and needed to brush up on current standards of care in a variety of areas. It was a real pleasure to read up on these areas in CMDT 2013. In a previous year, I'd been on the the front lines with H1N1 as it sent the healthy and strapping to ventilators; this year I need to know the management of influenza in the relatively well outpatient. Of course, I could look this up on the CDC website for free, but combine this with acute cholecystitis, post-operative ileus, bi-polar disorder, and suddenly the price of an updated edition of CMDT looks quite reasonable.
