Treatment of Cancer Fifth Edition (A Hodder Arnold Publication)

Treatment of Cancer Fifth Edition (A Hodder Arnold Publication)

Since the first edition was published in 1982, Treatment of Cancer has become a standard text for postgraduate physicians in the UK and beyond, providing all information necessary for modern cancer management in one comprehensive but accessible volume. By inviting experts from a number of disciplines to share their knowledge, the editors have succeeded in delivering a truly integrated approach to the care of the patient with cancer.

This fifth edition adopts the successful structure of previous editions, whilst being thoroughly revised and updated, and with several completely new chapters, covering important topics such as drug development, cancer prevention, and economics of cancer care, as well as treatments such as radioimmunotherapy, biological therapies and antibody therapy.

Part One considers the scientific basis and fundamental principles underlying cancer treatment and examines the likely developments that will occur over the next decade at the leading edge of oncology. Part Two is divided into two sections; the first covering general issues of cancer management, including planning techniques, concomitent chemoradiotherapy, surgical oncology and palliative care; and the second using a system-based approach to cover the clinical aspects and management plans for the whole spectrum of malignant disease.

Treatment of Cancer surpasses other oncology texts in condensing the essential information for exemplary cancer care into one readable and accessible guide, and will be an invaluable addition to the bookshelves of the busy oncologist in training or in practice

Handbook of Clinical Nutrition and Aging

Handbook of Clinical Nutrition and Aging (Nutrition and Health) by Connie W. Bales (Editor), Christine S. Ritchie (Editor).

As the older adult population continues to grow, so will the prevalence and incidence of age-related disorders. In Handbook of Clinical Nutrition and Aging, Second Edition, the editors and contributors (a panel of recognized academic nutritionists, geriatricians, clinicians and scientists) have thoroughly updated and revised their widely acclaimed first edition with fresh perspectives and the latest scientific and clinical developments in age-associated disease. New chapters tackle ecological perspectives on adult eating behavior, and behavioral theories applied to nutritional therapies in aging, while topics such as Sarcopenia and Cachexia are discussed in greater detail. The authors outline the physiological basis for each disorder, provide the latest information about the interaction of nutrition with these conditions, and review the potential routes and mechanisms for clinical intervention.

Parasitology for Medical and Clinical Laboratory Professionals

Parasitology for Medical and Clinical Laboratory Professionals by John W Ridley

PARASITOLOGY FOR MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIANS is the ideal text to guide readers in understanding the background, source, recovery, and identification of a well-representative range of organisms that commonly affect humans. This book organizes a complex set of topics into an understandable and easy-to-read format that will help readers learn more about parasitic infections and how to effectively collect and prepare samples, aiding in the diagnosis of parasitosis. The subtle differences between similar parasitic organisms are all explained in a simple and easily understood manner, increasing the likelihood that readers will be able to recover the parasites, prepare them for identification and, subsequently, ensure effective treatment.

"This manuscript is written for both technicians and technologists. It provides both didactic and technical protocols in one text. The study of medical parasitology is documented from a historical perspective to the current date along with the tedious, accurate identification of pathogenic versus nonpathogenic organisms. This textbook is becoming available to replace the typically used textbooks in clinical laboratory science programs." Mildred K. Fuller, Ph.D., MT (ASCP), Norfolk State University

"As a professional microbiologist, I found this book to be interesting and easy to read. The book covers many of the parasites that are clinically relevant without being to technical or fact heavy." - Tobi L Camilli BS, ASCP(M), University of New Mexico, Gallup Branch

Molecular Biology of the Cell by Bruce Alberts

For nearly a quarter century Molecular Biology of the Cell has been the leading cell biology textbook. This tradition continues with the new Fifth Edition, which has been completely revised and updated to describe our current, rapidly advancing understanding of cell biology. To list but a few examples, a large amount of new material is presented on epigenetics; stem cells; RNAi; comparative genomics; the latest cancer therapies; apoptosis (now its own separate chapter); and cell cycle control and the mechanics of M phase (now integrated into one chapter).

The hallmark features of Molecular Biology of the Cell have been retained, such as its consistent and comprehensive art program, clear concept headings, and succinct section summaries. Additionally, in response to extensive feedback from readers, the Fifth Edition now includes several new features.

It is now more portable. Chapters 1-20 are printed and Chapters 21-25, covering multicellular systems, are provided as PDF files on the free Media DVD-ROM which accompanies the book.* And for the first time, Molecular Biology of the Cell now contains end-of-chapter questions. These problems, written by John Wilson and Tim Hunt, emphasize a quantitative approach and the art of reasoning from experiments, and they will help students review and extend their knowledge derived from reading the textbook. The Media DVD-ROM, which is packaged with every copy of the book, contains PowerPoint® presentations with all of the figures, tables and micrographs from the text (available as JPEGs too). Also included is the Media Player, which plays over 125 movies—animations, videos, and molecular models—all with voice-over narration. A new reader-friendly feature is the integration of media codes throughout the text that link directly to relevant videos and animations. The Media DVD-ROM holds the multicellular systems chapters (21-25) of the text as well.

By skillfully extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and thereby create a coherent framework through which readers may approach and enjoy this subject that is so central to all of biology.

Molecular Cell Biology (Lodish, Molecular Cell Biology)

Molecular Cell Biology (Lodish, Molecular Cell Biology) by Harvey Lodish (Author)

Molecular Cell Biology presents the key concepts in cell biology and their experimental underpinnings. The authors, all world-class researchers and teachers, incorporate medically relevant examples where appropriate to help illustrate the connections between cell biology and health and human disease.

As always, a hallmark of MCB is the use of experiments to engage students in the history of cell biology and the research that has contributed to the field. Modern biology is rooted in an understanding of the molecules within cells and of the interactions between cells that allow construction of multicellular organisms. The more we learn about the structure, function, and development of different organisms, the more we recognize that all life processes exhibit remarkable similarities. Molecular Cell Biology concentrates on the macromolecules and reactions studied by biochemists, the processes described by cell biologists, and the gene control pathways identified by molecular biologists and geneticists. In this millennium, two gathering forces will reshape molecular cell biology:genomics, the complete DNA sequence of many organisms, and proteomics, a knowledge of all the possible shapes and functions that proteins employ.
All the concepts of molecular cell biology continue to be derived from experiments, and powerful experimental tools that allow the study of living cells and organisms at higher and higher levels of resolution are being developed constantly. In this fourth edition, we address the current state of molecular cell biology and look forward to what further exploration will uncover in the twenty-first century.

Pediatric Hematology: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Medicine)

Pediatric Hematology: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Medicine)by Nicholas J. Goulden

Author Review "Pediatric Hematology, Methods and Protocols, is an excellent reference book for physicians and scientists who serve pediatric patients in the specialty of hematology. This book is a valuable technical manual for laboratory scientists to set up new diagnostic tests and to troubleshoot and improve their current diagnostic methods. It is also a very practical guideline for physicians to choose relevant tests to arrive at correct diagnoses in light of clinical history and symptoms. The book is well organized, concisely written, and easy to understand.

To the best of my knowledge, no other book describes the molecular diagnostic methods of pediatric hematologic disorders in such detail. I highly recommend this book for laboratories of hematology and molecular diagnosis in hospitals serving pediatric patients." -Society for Pediatric Pathology "The information in this book is clearly expressed...a useful and practical text for laboratory scientists..." - Journal of Pediatrics and Child Health

From the Back Cover Molecular techniques are now an integral part of the practice of modern pediatric hematology. In Pediatric Hematology: Methods and Protocols, hands-on masters of laboratory techniques describe their best methods for investigating and detecting a wide variety of hematological disorders.

Here, the reader will find cutting-edge molecular protocols for the diagnosis of Fanconi anemia, dyskeratosis congenita, immunodeficiency, and most forms of hemoglobinopathy. In addition, there are detailed methods for molecular human platelet antigen genotyping, an effective PCR procedure for thrombophilia screening, and protocols for fluorescent in situ hybridization for cases in which insufficient metaphases are recovered or cryptic translocations are not visible.

Since the measurement of minimal residual disease (MRD) provides a much more accurate risk-directed therapy, three methods are presented for detecting residual leukemia below the threshold of light microscopy, along with relatively simple, rapid, and inexpensive methods for the detection of MRD in ALL and AML. On the cutting-edge of technology, microarrays are used for the analysis of gene expression in childhood leukemia, and novel methods of graft engineering and reduced intensity conditioning regimens are applied to tissue typing for the assessment of donor/recipient chimerism. Each readily reproducible protocol is described in step-by-step detail and includes an introduction to the principle behind the method, equipment and reagent lists, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and highly practical,

Pediatric Hematology: Methods and Protocols offers experimental and clinical investigators a gold-standard collection of reliable molecular techniques essential to the diagnosis, classification, and treatment of childhood hematological disorders.

Books Review

"As someone who has used this book in the past, I know it is excellent for teaching medical students. It also is reasonably priced for students who are dealing with the high cost of medical education. The most valuable features are the excellent pictures and figures that enhance the understanding of complex issues. Each chapter is followed by a few thought-provoking questions that can be used during teaching to encourage deeper understanding of the material.
Although written for medical students in the first years of training, the book also is very useful for students in advanced training such as residency or fellowships." - Rebecca T. Horvat, PhD, D(ABMM)(University of Kansas Medical Center), from Doody's Reviews
